Our Story
Hearing loss affects more than your ability to communicate with others. It threatens your independence and your quality of life.
More than 50,000 patients have reaped the benefits of the exceptional care we provide, enjoying the lifestyles and quality of life that result from our state-of-the-art treatment technology, our extensive experience, and the compassionate approach that we apply to providing top-level hearing rehabilitation.
Providing you with a confident, relaxed, and fulfilling lifestyle is the ultimate goal every member of our team works to provide for our patients.
Our Promise to You
Preferred Hearing Centers makes your hearing our priority. Our team is committed to providing custom-designed hearing healthcare to each patient, meeting their unique needs, and accommodating their lifestyle and preferences. Thirteen features of our commitment to our patients provide evidence of just how far we will go to serve you.
#1 - Return to Enjoying the Things You Love
Our Total Hearing Loss Treatment Program focuses on more than just fitting you with a customized Hearing Aid System. It is our goal to get you back to enjoying the things you love. Whether music, social gatherings, a walk in the park, or enjoying the riches of interacting with friends and loved ones, Preferred Hearing Centers will stand by you with professional equipment, support, and the encouragement you need.
#2 - Access to Over 50 Years of Experience
Your hearing health is important to us and we are passionate about helping to restore clarity to the sound experience of everyone we serve, including you! Although we opened our doors in 1992, our patients have access to more than 50 years of staff experience and a team of professionals dedicated to improving ourselves through keeping up to date on the latest innovations in technology and treatment strategies.
#3 - We Continue Our Education
Keeping up to date on innovations and treatment strategies includes continuing our education. As proof of our commitment, all members of our team regularly participate in ongoing education, which includes coursework and advanced training such as:
- Attending training twice each year at the Florida Society of Hearing Health Care Professionals
- Attending 3-4 training seminars annually with various hearing aid manufacturers
In addition, our founder, Mark Johnson, also participates in providing continuing education in several ways such as:
- Serving as a keynote speaker at the International Hearing Society in Japan
- Community education seminars at senior living facilities
- Local health fairs
- Speaking on hearing health at local elementary schools
- Offering support to community-based charities like Christian HELP Charity
- Serving as a guest speaker at the Communications Disorders Speech Pathology course at the University of Central Florida
#4 - Family-Owned Hearing Centers
Inspiration for founding Preferred Hearing Centers came from an early awareness of the impact hearing loss has on a person and their loved ones. Our founder, Mark Johnson, troubled by his grandfather’s untreated hearing loss and how it affected his family, led him to begin his hearing healthcare career in 1993. He is passionate about making a difference in the lives of his patients, which is why you can expect to receive the same level of care we would provide to our own family.
#5 - Board-Certified Hearing Instrument Specialists
In addition to our practice helping to restore sound to over 50,000 patients since 1992, Mark Johnson is also board certified by the National Board for Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences (NBC-HIS). He is also A.C.A certified, completing the International Hearing Aid Societies program to become a certified audioprosthologist.
Hearing instrument specialists must have significant knowledge and expertise, and they must demonstrate the capacity to apply the highest standard of care by presenting consistent, successful results from their own patients in order to maintain certification.
Being board certified is further evidence of our team’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in providing high-quality hearing care in Florida. It also provides you with the assurance of our capacity to properly evaluate and recommend the course of treatment best-suited to meet your unique needs.
#6 - Same-Day Hearing Care & Treatment Available
Some hearing clinics schedule a preliminary consultation and then require you to make a second appointment to start treatment. We understand that your time is valuable, respecting your busy schedule by providing hearing care and treatment on the same day you take advantage of our free hearing assessment. After all, the sooner you get started with treatment, the sooner you will be back to living the independent lifestyle you choose.
#7 - Virtually No Wait Times
Although our waiting room is comfortable, we prefer that you don’t spend a lot of time in it. Your time is too valuable to be spent sitting in anyone’s waiting room. Our team works hard to stay on schedule and operate smoothly. That means you can expect to see one of our specialists at the time, or close to the time, your appointment is scheduled to begin. That’s just one more commitment we are proud to make and keep for our patients.
#8 - In-Depth Personalized Care
Our patient-centric approach to hearing healthcare means we will work with you to discover what areas are causing you the most difficulty, and then we will collaborate with you to determine the best treatment plan to fit your needs. Although hearing aids are one of our available treatment options, it is not the only one and we work toward goals meant to achieve the best possible hearing health for you and your circumstances. Ongoing counseling, periodic adjustments, regular hearing aid maintenance, and evaluating the success of our treatment approach are all vital components in providing you with overall satisfaction and hearing rehabilitation. Ours is a long-term partnership designed to accomplish long-term goals to meet your needs.
#9 - Emergency Hearing Aid Appointments
When first getting used to your hearing aids, there is an adaption period. During that period, there are times when adjustments are necessary to prevent unnecessary discomfort. Our patients who are struggling with their hearing aids—for any reason, despite following our guidelines—can expect to receive an emergency customization appointment as soon as possible, which often includes the same day that you give us a call.
#10 - Family Discount
Restored hearing is our commitment to all of our patients and we do whatever we can to make it easier for you to get the help you need. A major part of our commitment comes through offering a complimentary Preferred Hearing Centers hearing assessment as well as multiple, affordable payment options, but among our most impressive unique offers is a $100 per hearing aid treatment to any family member of a patient who is fitted with hearing aids at the same time.
#11 - Complimentary Preferred Hearing Centers Hearing Assessment
Getting a complete picture and adequately evaluating your hearing ability requires more than just playing different sounds at different volumes and asking you whether you can hear it or not. An assessment at our clinic focuses on gathering information about your family history, medical history, injuries, lifestyle, and other factors that provide a more in-depth assessment of your overall condition and range of treatment options best suited to meet your needs. Our comprehensive understanding of your hearing profile allows us to customize a hearing rehabilitation program that improves hearing volume, hearing clarity, and even enhances your cognitive abilities.
#12 - Affordable Payment Options
Advanced NeuroTechnology™ hearing aids are an investment in better hearing health and improved cognitive ability. We do all that we can to make it easy for you to reap the benefits of all of our high-quality hearing aid solutions without placing a burden on your finances. As a part of taking the extra step to serve our patients, we are pleased to offer flexible monthly payment options, including 0% interest payment plans through HCS (Health Credit Services) and Care Credit.

Meet Founder, Mark D. Johnson
In His Own Words
Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, I was very close to my Grandpa Kenning. Grandpa was kept out of WWII due to a severe hearing loss in his left ear. He was never treated for his hearing loss, which made verbal interaction very difficult, and this was quite frustrating for Grandpa and for the entire family. Seeing my grandpa struggle with communicating, I became aware at an early age of the negative impact hearing loss has on a person and their family.
Immediately after high school, I enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force as a supply sergeant. During my tour of service, I spent time in Denver, CO, Okinawa, Japan, the Philippines, and the Black Hills Mountain region of South Dakota. After my Air Force service, I moved to Florida and attended the University of South Florida in Tampa. I am also a graduate of Rhema Bible Training College in Tulsa, OK.
I began my career in the hearing healthcare field in 1993 with a major hearing aid/care provider. I opened my own practice in the fall of 1994 in Orlando, FL. In 1995, I became board certified, and through my continued training received my A.C.A. credentialing as a certified audioprosthologist in 1997.
Quality of life is about connecting with the people and the things we love. As a hearing healthcare professional, I find great joy in helping to restore a person’s connection to their world. Due to my extensive knowledge and understanding of the difficulties faced by the hearing impaired, I have had the opportunities throughout my career, to lend my expertise to others in the field. I have conducted many hearing educational workshops, both for professionals and for the general public. I have also personally trained many individuals in the hearing healthcare field. I love passing on my passion for helping people to hear better to others.
In 2011, I was greatly honored to be invited to Osaka, Japan as the keynote speaker for the International Hearing Society Annual Convention. It was a privilege to train a large group of practitioners who had gathered from all over Japan.
In 2004, I married my wife (and business partner) Brenda. We enjoy everything ocean-related and always look forward to traveling and experiencing new people, places, and food. I have visited 35 foreign countries, and we are always planning and looking forward to our next trip. Brenda and I are active members of Embassy International Church in Winter Park.
I have a wonderful son Michael, and we have two precious grandchildren, Andrew and Sophia, who we really enjoy spending time with and being a regular part of their lives, school activities, and sports involvements.
Meet Co-Founder, Brenda Johnson
Brenda Johnson is co-owner of Preferred Hearing Centers, with her husband Mark Johnson. At Preferred Hearing Centers, Brenda fills the role of office administrator and bookkeeper. Brenda is a Florida native who spent her early childhood years in Clewiston, FL. At the age of eight, her family relocated to Fort Myers, where she lived until 2005.
After high school, Brenda joined the Lee County Tax Collector’s office and worked in various positions. Her last years there were spent as the lead manager of a large special assessments department. Her skills in customer service, record keeping, payment processing, staff management, and all things clerical were enhanced and developed during her employment.
After resigning from the Tax Collectors office, Brenda took a position as administrative assistant at her local Fort Myers church. She loved being involved in the church life, and also in serving the pastors and members. Brenda also served as the singles ministry leader until she married Mark.
In 2003, Brenda met Mark at a church event (sounds like a movie title). They were joyfully married 9 months later. In 2005, they moved to Englewood, FL where they built a successful hearing aid business from the ground up. Englewood was a delightful place to live. After ten years, and with three offices up and running successfully – they were made an offer they could not refuse. A Corporate Hearing Aid Center purchased the business.
Shortly thereafter, the decision was made to move back to Orlando, Mark’s previous hometown. The grandchildren, who live in the Orlando area, were a big motivation for the move. Shortly after arriving in Orlando, Mark & Brenda started Preferred Hearing Centers and have built it into one of the most successful hearing aid offices in Florida.
The role of nana is the best position Brenda has ever had, and spending time with her grandchildren is her favorite thing to do. Her hobbies include reading, walking, and cycling. She is an avid nature lover and enjoys time on the beach or hikes in the woods. She and Mark currently attend Embassy Intl. Church in Orlando where they serve in several capacities.
